Mitch

This story imagines if Connie had loss Mitch in a much more tragic way..

Connie had only been dating Mitch for two months, but it had been perfect, or so she thought as she vigorously scrubbed the counter at Whit’s End. She couldn’t wait for their dinner date tonight, where they would have the whole place to themselves. As she meticulously picked up streaks of ice cream left by kids on the counter, Connie’s mind was preoccupied with thoughts of Mitch. She was wearing her favorite yellow sweater, the one that he loved because it made her stand out. She almost tripped over a stool as she made her way to the other side of the counter, but she managed to catch herself just in time to avoid getting the ice cream on her sweater.

Before she could get lost in her thoughts of Mitch again, Whit walked in and announced that he was leaving for the day. Connie glanced at the clock and realized that it was already evening. “Okay, Whit, see you tomorrow,” she replied as he left.

As the evening crept by, Connie closed up shop and eagerly awaited Mitch’s arrival. When he walked in through the front doors, she kept calm and greeted him with a smile. “Hi Mitch, our dinner is almost ready but I haven’t set the table yet,” she said. Mitch responded, “That’s fine, I’ll do it for you.” Connie thanked him and headed back into the kitchen to finish preparing their meal.

When she returned to the dining room, she was pleased to see that Mitch had set the table beautifully. As they sat down to eat, Connie felt a sense of contentment wash over her. But then Mitch’s behavior started to seem a bit strange. He kept his head down and tried to hide a smile. When Connie asked him why he was smiling, he simply replied, “You’ll know soon enough.”

The rest of the evening went by in a blur until Mitch asked Connie to refill his glass. As she did so, she opened her phone to remind her friend Jules to lock the door before going to sleep. When she returned to the dining room, she was horrified to find Mitch sprawled out on the floor next to the table. There was no blood, but he was unresponsive. Panicking, Connie called out his name while dialing 911. She shook him, hoping he would wake up, but when she tried to find his pulse, she couldn’t feel anything.

The police and ambulance arrived, but it was too late. Mitch was dead, and the diamond ring sitting on the table made it clear that he had been planning to propose to Connie. She was inconsolable, crying uncontrollably as she tried to come to terms with the sudden loss of the man she loved.
