Leaving Connie & Eugene Unsupervised

Summary:

I basically took an incorrect quote dialogue thingy and turned it into a whole short story/scene that I found funny. Hope you enjoy reading this quick little thing!

“Well then, I’m glad to hear this window job won’t take long.” Bernard commented, as he and Whit climbed the front steps of Whit’s End. “Which means I’ll be able to have some coffee before the next one.” Whit smiled and nodded. “I’ll make sure there’s a cup for you when you’re done.” He assured his friend, while opening the door for them both to go inside.

Entering the Ice Cream parlor, both paused from entering any further. The lack of kids and customers in the room made the multiple puddles of various melting ice cream flavors glaringly obvious, along with Connie attempting to scoop it up into one large mop bucket even more so. The front of her pants were dirty with ice cream, and she was grumbling to herself as she did—her co-worker’s name coming up in every other short sentence.

Before either Whit or Bernard could even begin to ask Connie what had happened, Eugene returned to the room—a bucket of soapy water in his grip. She looked up at him, holding back a huff. “What took you so long?” Eugene deadpanned a little. “It would seem your perception of time is distorted. I was gone for hardly a couple of minutes.”

“Yeah, sure. Just so long as it gets you out of helping me!” Connie retorted in accusation. “And this was your fault, Eugene!” Setting the bucket down nearby, Eugene shook his head. “You only say that because you rather not take the blame!”

“I wouldn’t have dropped these buckets of ice cream if you had helped me bring them inside in the first place!”

“And I would have assisted you if you had come upstairs to ask me!” Connie finally rolled her eyes. “I did ! I thought you’d heard me—I was only standing right next to you when I asked!”

Whit cleared his throat to gain both his employees’ attention. Connie nearly jumped, while Eugene more calmly turned to look at them both. “Greetings, Mr. Whittaker. Mr. Walton.” Bernard gave a, though confused, nod in a greeting of his own. And as the window washer simply went on to a nearby window with his own bucket and squeegee, Whit, on the other hand, went on to ask, “What in the world happened here?”

“Okay, look, yes , I dropped a couple tubs of ice cream.” Connie confessed, propping the mop handle against a nearby table for a moment. “But in my defense, I was left unsupervised!” Whit blinked. He glanced between the two. “… Wasn’t Eugene with you?”

“You aren’t incorrect, Mr. Whittaker, and though-” Eugene’s answer was interrupted by Bernard, who clasped onto his shoulders and was giving Whit a look of mock disbelief. “In Eugene’s defense, he was also left unsupervised.” Despite the mess of ice cream on the floor that had yet to be cleaned , Connie couldn’t help the small giggle at seeing Eugene’s expression of incredulous offense. “You can’t be leavin’ these two all alone, Whit. I would’ve thought you learnt that by now.” Bernard added, faking a tone of mild disappointment. Whit was also smirking, whilst shaking his head.

“The order of ice cream was left on the porch by the delivery driver,” Connie then went on to explain. “I tried carrying them all in—with no help from Eugene, might I add—and I dropped them.” Eugene held his tongue at Connie once again mentioning his lacking to help. “That’s alright, Connie. I’ll help you out.” Whit assured her, as he took off his sweater and hung it on a chair at a safe distance from the mess in the middle of the parlor. “Is this all the ice cream from the order?”

“No, the ones I didn’t drop are in the freezer.” Whit nodded. “Good.” He looked over to Eugene. “Eugene, could you go get the spare mop?” With a small sigh, Eugene nodded. “Right away, Mr. Whittaker.” Bernard chuckled to himself, as he got on with his own task of cleaning the windows.
