It Was Certainly a ‘Choice’

Leonard and Everett Meltsner are in Odyssey visiting family. And on their second morning in town, Everett feels he should probably warn his older brother about their Dad’s fashion taste.

Walking into the kitchen, Eugene adjusted the lapels of the vest he’d donned that monring. It was one of the more simple-patterned of his collection, complimenting the pale gray shirt he wore underneath it. Everett nodded in his older brother’s direction, having already been in the kitchen for a banana. “Good morning, Everett.”

“Good morning to you too, Eugene.” Everett answered, adding with, “Nice ensemble.” Eugene gave him a puzzled look. “Er, pardon?” As he went about getting a mug for coffee, his brother clarified. “Your vest and shirt, I mean.”

“Thank you, I suppose.” Eugene replied, finding the compliment a bit unexpected. “It’s good to see that at least you can put together a good outfit.” Placing his mug of choice under the dispenser of the coffee machine, Eugene glanced at Everett. “I don’t believe I follow your meaning.”

“I’m talking about Dad.” Everett clarified, lowering his voice for fear of their father hearing—as if the walls of the house were no thicker than a sheet of paper. “I am almost convinced he must be colorblind sometimes, with his shirt and vest combos…!”

“I’m certain it isn’t so bad, Everett.” Came Eugene’s response. “Afterall, his combination of choice yesterday was rather tasteful.” Everett shook his head, giving his older brother a pitying look. “Eugene, you don’t understand, that was just to ease you in. He-“

“Eugene?” Everett quickly zipped it when he heard their father’s voice. Leonard joined his sons in the kitchen, his choice of outfit being the first thing Eugene noticed. “… Yes?”

“I’m going to the post office. I’ve a document to mail.” Leonard explained. “I… see. Do you wish for me to accompany you, Dad?” Eugene offered, making an effort to maintain eye contact only. “No, that’s alright. I’m confident I can find it with no issue.”

“Very well.” Leonard nodded, before heading to leave the house. After a moment, Everett looked out to the foyer. Their father had left. He turned back to Eugene, sporting a bit of an “I don’t you so!” expression. “I… believe I understand your argument.”

Thank you!” Eugene pointed at Everett using the spoon he’d been stirring his coffee with. “However, you did not hear this from me, understood?” His brother nodded as he ate the last bite of his banana. Eugene shook his head, leaving the room with his cup of coffee.
